THE PASTOR SPEAKS OUT!!!!
I am often asked as to what the Bible teaches concerning tithing. Is
tithing under the law? How do we practice giving in light of the New Covenant
of Grace?
I cannot deal with the subject in depth here; suffice to say that
tithing was in practice before being included in Mosaic Law. The Bible says
that Abraham gave of tithes to Melchisedec (Genesis 14:20; Hebrews 7:5-9). Of
course tithing was a part of the Old Covenant under Mosaic Law (Leviticus
27:31; Deuteronomy 12:6; Malachi 3:8-10).
But that was in the Old Testament times. What did Jesus have to say
about tithing?
First of all, tithing was not a problem in Jesus day; it apparently
was practiced without much problem.
Luke 11:42
“for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs.”
This was not a problem as far as Jesus was concerned. He went on to
say-
“and pass over judgment and the love of God:”
Did Jesus teach them not to tithe? NO! He simply went on to put some
balance in their actions with these words-
“these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.” In
other words you ought to tithe, but you ought also not to forget judgment and
the love of God.
All the way through scripture, tithing is not the sum total of a
believers giving to God and His work. The Bible talks to us about tithing, and
faith promise giving, and about sacrificial giving.
Luke 6:38
“Give and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down,
and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with
the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
This we call the law of sowing and reaping. It is as a farmer sowing seed in a field. If he sows little, he will reap little. If he sows much he will reap much. The farmer will reap a harvest proportionate in quantity and quality to that sown. See Galatians 6:7-9.
“Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”-DPTSr.
